In 2004, Duran Duran attended the MTV Europe Music Awards in Rome and began collecting celebrity signatures on a soccer ball. Duran Duran founding member, Nick Rhodes, led the celebrity signature drive, believing the soccer ball would make a great auction item – with proceeds to benefit charity.

After seeing the devastation created by the Tsunami in South Asia, the band agreed to redouble their efforts and eventually auction the ball to benefit a charity involved in Tsunami relief.

All proceeds from the celebrity signed soccer ball will benefit GlobalGiving, a charitable organization which focuses on grassroots and project-based relief efforts in areas affected by the Tsunami.

The soccer ball made its first public appearance on National English TV in January 2005. After crossing the pond, gathering signatures along the way, the ball made its final showing on February 1, 2005 on Good Morning America. During the Good Morning America segment, the band announced their plan to auction the ball on eBay March 7, 2005.
