New on the music scene is Birmingham-born Jamelia. She's hit the charts with her debut single Money.
Her next single is out and we caught up with her in he home city and right outside her old school.
PR: How did it all begin for you?
J: I've always sung all my life, and it started when one of my cousin took one of my Karaoke tapes to a record company and basically they asked to sign me. I was astonished.
PR: Do you get to come home very often?
J: I don't get to come home as often as I'd like to. But when I do get home I make sure that I go and visit everyone, so it's okay.
PR: What's that like going home?
J: It's great. My mum doesn't treat me like I'm Jamelia the star, and I wouldn't like her to. When I walk in to the house she says okay, go and do the dishes!
PR: Well, we saw you doing your ironing earlier, so it can't be that glamorous.
J: People do offer to do things for me but I've two hands and two legs, I am capable so there's no need for people to do it if they don't have to.
PR: Tell me what you miss about the Midlands when you're away.
J: I guess, just being here, because I'm in London so much I think I've lost my accent a little bit! I think Birmingham's a lot calmer and a lot more subdued than London, because London's just crazy. I do enjoy coming back home.
PR: Do you write your own songs?
J: Yes, I do write my own songs. Everything that's on my album I've written or co-written. I think it's important to do that, then the listener gets an idea what I'm about.
PR: Would you say that Birmingham has inspired your music?
J: Not really, I wouldn't say that. Birmingham's inspired the title of my album though, because when something big's happening, we say Drama and I've called my album Drama. So that's a little Birmingham thing.
PR: What it's like to be outside your old school?
J: Very weird! I never imagined that I would be coming back here to do a show. I'm not sad that I'm back here because I loved school and being here. I'm going to have some school dinners in a minute!
PR: Tell us what's been happening here today.
J: Well, it's part of my school tour and this is the last day. Basically I'm touring the schools in and around Birmingham. These are like our main consumers, this age group, and I insisted that I come back to my old school because I loved it so much.
PR: So what kind of response do you get?
J: My school is always the best response, it's really positive and encouraging. I'm always happy to carry on because I know I've got so many people behind me.
PR: Have you ever had any bad reactions?
J: The worst reaction is when they're not enthusiastic about the show or they just sit there and there's no response. I've never had no response at all, but some schools are less enthusiastic than others. I don't mind, I try and get them hyped and it usually works.
PR: What was it like having Money go into the top 5?
J: Weird is the word. No way would I ever have imagined me putting out a single, never mind it going to number 5. So that was something special for me. I still can't believe it really.
PR: Tell us about your new single.
J: My new single is called 'Call Me', it's out on 5th June. It's about a girl telling her guy to call her, I wrote it when I was still at school actually. I think that it's something that everyone will be able to relate to, so I just hope they love it really.
PR: So you were actually writing when you were at school?
J: Oh yeah, though not when I was in school, as I'd get in to trouble!
PR: What would your words of advice be to students who want to get to where you are?
J: Definitely believe in yourself and don't let anybody put you down, as long as you believe in it'll happen. I think I'm proof that it can.
PR: So what's it like being Jamelia at the moment?
J: Not how it used to be. I'm not just Jamelia anymore, I'm Jamelia the singer and lots of other things, it's very weird.
PR: Did someone else create the image?
J: I'm a bit of a stubborn person, so if I don't like what I'm wearing I will tell them. I'll compromise with them. I think it's a joint thing where the image is concerned. I've got to be happy with it as well as them.
PR: So what's going to be happening in the future?
J: Well, my future ambitions are to continue to be as happy as I am at the moment and to be working with the people that have influenced me and continue influencing other people, like my school.
PR: Great, thank you for joining me today, and good luck with the new single.
